What Is an AI Skill? Explained in One Minute
One sentence: a skill is a written set of working instructions that shows your AI assistant how to do one job beautifully.
An analogy
Imagine hiring a brilliant assistant on their first day. You say "make me a pitch deck" — they'll improvise from scratch and hand you something mediocre.
But give them a "pitch deck playbook" — what goes on slide 1, which question slide 2 must answer, max words per slide — and suddenly the output looks professional.
A skill is that playbook. Only the reader isn't a person. It's an AI.
What's inside a skill
A skill usually contains three things:
- When to use it: which situations call for this skill
- The workflow: step-by-step instructions, with each step's input and output spelled out
- The quality bar: what the finished work must look like, and which mistakes are never allowed
How is it different from a prompt?
A prompt is a one-off whisper. A skill is a craft you can reuse. Install it into your AI's skills directory, and every time the right kind of job comes up, your assistant reaches for it automatically — no re-teaching required.
What a skill looks like at SkillShop
Every skill is a folder with a SKILL.md (the playbook) and a starter template. Download, unzip, drop it into your AI's skills directory — done. No account, no sign-in.
