3 Practical Ways to Pick a Skill
You don't need many skills. You need the right ones. Three practical rules:
1. Start from what you owe next week
Don't browse the catalog first. Ask: what do I have to deliver next week? A report? A poster? A quote?
Pick from the job, not the shelf. One skill, one concrete deliverable. Every skill you install this way gets used for real.
2. Check it explains its own output
A good skill page always answers three questions:
- What it makes: what does the finished work look like — any examples?
- Who it's for: who was this written for?
- How long it takes: roughly how long from start to finished draft?
If a skill can't answer all three, it hasn't thought itself through. Skip it for now.
3. Install one, run it end to end
First time with skills? Don't hoard:
- Pick the skill matching something you genuinely need to do soon
- Install it with the one-line installer on its page
- Have your AI do the job with it, start to finish
One full run teaches you what skills are about. Everything after that is easy.
The short version
Pick by job, check the output, run one end to end. SkillShop's 12 launch skills were written to exactly this standard — each maps to one concrete deliverable.
